“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. ” Marianne Williamson
Have you noticed any sunflowers yet this summer? Growing tall and bold and bright, their faces turned to the light of the sun?
It’s not hard to see that sunflower essence helps you to embody your confidence and power so you can radiate your light effortlessly, like the bright light of the sun.
Sunflower is a flower I struggled to fall in love with. I found them too big. Too bright. Too bold. Too exuberant.
Truthfully I couldn’t appreciate their radiant beauty when I couldn’t appreciate my own.
I didn’t want to take up too much space. I was scared of being too much. Too bright. Of claiming my space in the world. Scared to step into a leadership role. Scared of my own power. Scared of really being seen.
Last summer I took sunflower essence for a month. I resisted it like crazy because I knew it would change things and push me out of my comfort zone. I knew that I needed to get comfortable with stepping up and being more visible if my work was to have any sort of impact and reach the people who will benefit from it. There’s no point devoting my time to creating resources to help people make peace with uncomfortable emotions and live with more love, presence and peace if I only tell a few people about them.
Playing small serves nobody.
But the thought of ‘putting myself out there’ in a bigger and bolder more visible way was TERRIFYING. Cue panic attacks for a week.
Sunflower was exactly the medicine I needed last summer and now a year later life feels very different. I feel more confident and self assured, more comfortable being seen, more able to express myself by taking empowered actions. I’m reaching many more people with my work.
I’ve always felt comfortable with my feminine receptive energy of going within, but struggled with the corresponding masculine energy of expressing myself in the world. Inner connection, meditation, feeling my way with things – easy and familiar. Initiating action, being focused and logical, putting my energy out there in a tangible way? Not so much.
Is this something you resonate with? It’s very common in women (and men) who haven’t integrated their inner masculine energy. If you grew up without a healthy masculine role model (either because your father was physically or emotionally absent) you will probably struggle to express yourself in the world in a healthy way. You might hide your light under a bushel through fear of not being good enough or over-compensate by pushing and striving to succeed; making things happen through sheer force of will.
“Just as the soul absorbs from the mother the moon-like qualities of receptivity and nurturing, so does the soul learn from the father the sun-like qualities of the shining, expressive Self. Sunflower heals disturbances or distortions in the soul’s relationship to the masculine, often associated with a conflicted or deficient relationship with the father in childhood. The healing of the masculine Self is equally important for both men and women.” Flower Essence Repertory Patricia Kaminski and Richard Katz
This August in The Soul Sanctuary we spend a month getting to know sunflower essence and meeting the stories, emotions, beliefs and patterns that stop us from integrating our masculine energy, claiming our power and shining our light.
We learn how to radiate our light – not from the effort of pushing or striving – but by discovering the place of empowered confidence within us which means our light spills out of us without us even trying. Radiating your light is not something you need to try to do; it’s not effortful – quite the opposite. It happens when you move into alignment with the truth in your heart and unravel the disempowering stories and patterns and wounds that stop you from remembering who you truly are.
Our guest teacher this month is John Siddique, who lives his life from an authentic place of heartfelt presence, rather than needing to prove or strive. John is perhaps best known as a writer and poet but has always lived from the light inside him and is now devoted to helping others to do the same through meditation, retreats and one-to-one sessions.
I see John as someone who embodies healthy masculine energy so he’s joining us as guest teacher for August as we explore sunflower essence and the interplay of divine masculine and feminine within us.
